Milestone for Renewable Energy in New South Wales
New South Wales has taken a big step forward in its renewable energy efforts with the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) transmission project receiving planning approval. This is the first time a Renewable Energy Zone in Australia has reached this stage, allowing for the construction of crucial infrastructure that will connect large-scale solar, wind, and energy storage projects to the electricity grid.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The Central-West Orana REZ is a key part of the NSW Government’s plan to provide clean, affordable, and reliable energy across the state. The project is expected to bring in up to $20 billion in private investment and create around 5,000 jobs during its peak construction phase. Once completed, it will generate enough electricity to power about 1.8 million homes.
Scope and Infrastructure Development
The planning approval means that work can soon begin on building around 240 kilometers of transmission lines and other infrastructure within the REZ, which covers an area of about 20,000 square kilometers, including towns like Dubbo, Dunedoo, and Mudgee. These new lines are essential for connecting major renewable energy projects to the grid, ensuring that clean energy can reach homes and businesses throughout NSW.
Environmental and Community Considerations
Before receiving approval, the project underwent a detailed Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which was shared with the public in late 2023. This process included steps to minimize any potential environmental and community impacts, with input from local communities and stakeholders leading to important changes in the project.
Government Conditions and Oversight
To make sure the project is carried out responsibly, the NSW Government has set nearly 100 conditions that must be followed during its development. These conditions are designed to protect both the environment and the interests of local communities.
Long-Term Benefits and Project Timeline
The Central-West Orana REZ is expected to boost the local economy by attracting investment and creating jobs, both during construction and in ongoing maintenance. The project is expected to reach financial close in the second half of 2024, with construction starting later in the year and the first operations beginning in 2028.
Statements from Key Ministers
Minister for Climate Change and Energy Penny Sharpe emphasized the significance of the project, stating that it will play a key role in transitioning away from coal-fired power stations toward cleaner energy sources. Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully also highlighted the project’s importance in helping NSW move towards its goal of 12 gigawatts of renewable energy generation under the state’s Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap.

More land taken out of food production!
And higher electricity bills. Nuclear is the Future.
Why aren’t we looking at nuclear or cleaner, more efficient coal plants? We should have built these years ago, but politics got in the way. Our current coal plants are already efficient, with a much lower impact than people realise.
