We are looking for a Specialist Health, Safety, & Environmental who will support delivering the health and safety strategic plan to the Wilmington site in the Port of Los Angeles. Reporting to the Borates Safety Superintendent and working in a collaborative community, you will be:

  • Support the implementation of Risk Reduction activities. Using good interpersonal skills to coach Supervisors in the use of risk management tools (such as Management of Change, Risk Assessment, Critical risk management, and Leadership in the Field)
  • Where appropriate, review safety, health, and environmental exposure when changes in practice, new equipment, or new processes are introduced
  • Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, company policies, and practices through monitoring of health and safety incidents, supporting Management of Change, incident findings, and assisting in the development of action plans to ensure continuous improvement
  • Facilitate incident investigations for high and critical incidents using root cause analysis methods (such as Essential Factor) to ensure effective, sustainable controls are implemented to prevent re-occurrence
  • Coach line management on the implementation of corporate health and safety initiatives (Take 5, safety interactions, CRM, SPI/PFI lessons learned)
  • Develop and implement arranged audit and inspection plans; train employees to raise awareness of Health and safety standards and environmental plans
  • Coordinate all ERT/BRT activities
  • Support the Borates Industrial Hygienist to deliver the hygiene monitoring program
  • Facilitate clinic visits, the regulatory testing program, and associated injury and illness management
  • Facilitate new hire safety training, yearly OSHA refresher training, and all other safety-related training (fall protection, confined space, isolation, etc.)

What youll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Experience working in a safety role in an industrial / mining/construction setting
  • An appropriate Health and Safety tertiary qualification or a combination of education and experience
  • A passion for working with people to achieve safe outcomes through your sound knowledge of safe work practices
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage competing priorities
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Strong communication and analytical skills both written and verbal
  • Operate with a high level of personal integrity
  • Demonstrate personal and teamwork behaviors that are always consistent with role expectations and the Rio Tinto values and priorities
  • Experience building good working relationships with stakeholders based on respect and openness.
  • Regulatory body experience (Cal-OSHA)
  • Knowledge of Marine safety and rail safety
  • Certified FSO (facility security officer)
  • Experience with facilitating safety-related training

This role is based in the Port of Los Angeles in the city of Wilmington, California. This historical site is one of the oldest operations in the Port of LA, some employees are third generation workers at this operation.
