$1 Billion Atlas and Roma North gas projects to Create 900 Jobs

Final Approval Secured for Major Expansion

Senex Energy has secured the final environmental approval from the Federal Government for its significant expansion of the Atlas and Roma North gas projects. This $1 billion development is poised to bring substantial benefits to Queensland, including the creation of 900 jobs, with 200 of those being ongoing roles.

Economic Benefits: A Boost for Local Communities

This final approval allows Senex to move forward with the expansion, which is expected to provide a considerable economic boost to the region. The project will channel over $200 million into local businesses and communities, offering long-term economic stability.

Job Creation and Long-Term Employment

“Senex’s expansion will generate significant employment opportunities, particularly in regional areas, with a strong focus on providing high-quality, well-paid jobs,” stated Ian Davies, CEO of Senex Energy. “The ongoing jobs will play a vital role in supporting families and local economies across Queensland.”

Meeting Domestic Gas Demand

The project is also strategically important for Australia’s energy supply, as it will produce 60 petajoules (PJ) of natural gas annually by 2025. This amount will contribute over 10% of the annual domestic gas needs of the east coast, reinforcing the region’s energy security.

Long-Term Supply Agreements Secured

Senex has already established eight long-term agreements with Australian manufacturers, such as CSR, to support the expansion’s success. These partnerships highlight the project’s importance to the domestic market and its role in bolstering the local manufacturing sector.

Integration with Queensland’s Energy and Jobs Plan

The Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, which guides the state’s energy transition, incorporates this project as part of its broader strategy. The plan aims to achieve 80% renewable energy by 2035, with the addition of up to 3GW of hydrogen-ready gas generation to ensure reliable energy supply during the transition away from coal.

Government Support and Strategic Importance

Resources and Critical Minerals Minister Scott Stewart emphasized the importance of the project in meeting Queensland’s domestic gas needs. “This expansion is a critical part of Queensland’s efforts to maintain energy security while transitioning to renewable sources. Since 2017, our state has made significant strides in dedicating land and resources to support the domestic energy market,” Minister Stewart remarked.

A Crucial Step Forward for Queensland

The Senex Energy expansion represents a crucial step forward for Queensland, driving economic growth, enhancing job creation, and securing the energy supply as the state navigates its path toward a sustainable energy future.

Looking Ahead: When Will Construction Begin?

With final approvals now in place, construction on the Atlas and Roma North expansion is expected to begin soon. While an exact start date hasn’t been detailed, companies typically aim to commence construction promptly to meet project deadlines, especially with gas production targeted for 2025.
