Australian Work Visas: Your Guide to Working Down Under

If you’re looking to work in Australia, you’ll need a valid working visa. Here’s a rundown of the main visa options available, helping you understand which one might be right for your situation.

Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa (Subclass 482)

The TSS visa allows Australian employers to address labor shortages by bringing in skilled workers from overseas. It has three streams:

Short-Term Stream: For occupations on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), valid for up to two years.
Medium-Term Stream: For occupations on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), valid for up to four years, with a pathway to permanent residency.
Labour Agreement Stream: For employers who have entered into a labor agreement with the Australian government.

Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

The Temporary Graduate visa is for international students who have recently graduated from an Australian educational institution. It allows them to live, study, and work in Australia temporarily. There are two streams:

Graduate Work Stream: For graduates with skills and qualifications relevant to an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). This visa is typically granted for 18 months.
Post-Study Work Stream: For graduates with a higher education degree from an Australian institution, valid for two to four years depending on the qualification.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)

The 491 visa allows skilled workers and their families to live, work, and study in designated regional areas for five years. It requires state or territory government nomination or sponsorship by an eligible family member residing in a designated regional area. This visa also offers a pathway to permanent residency.

Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 494)

The subclass 494 visa enables regional employers to address labor shortages by sponsoring skilled workers for positions they cannot fill locally. It has two streams:

Employer Sponsored Stream: For workers nominated by an employer in regional Australia.
Labour Agreement Stream: For workers nominated under a labor agreement with the Australian government.
